Information received concerning the lack of access to counsel in Cambodia, due to pressures on the legal profession and lack of access to free legal aid. Legal aid in Cambodia is reportedly affected by a lack of investment and funding by the authorities, and the lack of an adequate framework for legal aid. This gap has been covered by non-governmental organizations, who are now threatened by international funding cuts. These issues critically impact fair trial rights for all individuals in Cambodia, in particular those in rural areas and other groups in vulnerable situations, as well as the ability of legal professionals, including human rights lawyers, to operate freely and effectively in line with international human rights standards in defence of their clients’ rights.

Information received concerning an ongoing trend of a persistent erosion of the rights of Maori Indigenous Peoples rights through regressive legislations and policies that would breach New Zealand’s international obligations. The alleged worrying actions by the Government include: the proposed Regulatory Standards Bill, which excludes Māori legal traditions and undermines Treaty of Waitangi obligations; the enactment of the Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairarapa Tāmaki nui-ā-Rua Settlement Act, which overrode a Supreme Court ruling and extinguished a land claim without free, prior, and informed consent; and the Nelson Tenths case, where the Government appealed a High Court ruling in favor of Māori land return and compensation.

Information received concerning the European Union’s (EU) Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) Simplification Package, introduced by the European Commission on 14 May 2025. While I am aware that no formal call for input has yet been issued, and the proposal is currently under consideration by the European Parliament and Council, I believe this is a timely opportunity to offer my reflections, given the far-reaching implications of CAP reform for the right to food, both within the EU and globally.
