Information received concerning the alleged widespread arbitrary arrests and detention often followed by the enforced disapperance, torture, cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment of individuals in the context of the nationwide protests, as well as the imposition of the death penalty in cases predating the protests, where defendants were reportedly tried without due respect for fair trial guarantees and on the basis of torture-tainted confessions.
