Subject: Alleged assassination attempt against an advocate for girl’s education by the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). According to information received, on 9 October, 2012 two gunmen stopped the school bus in which Ms. Malala Yousafzai was returning home from school in the Swat Valley, Pakistan, and shot her and two other girls, critically injuring Ms. Yousafzai. On 10 October, a spokesperson for the TTP claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement to national and international media, and indicated that if she survives, she, and others who preach “secularism and so called enlightened modernism” will be targeted again.
