Subject: Alleged cases of acute lead poisoning. According to the information received, nearly 400 children have died since March 2010 as a result of lead poisoning, the majority of them at under 5 years of age. Allegedly, an additional 30,000 people in 7 villages in Zamfara State had been identified as being at risk of lead exposure by inhalation or ingestion. Allegedly, the deaths have been linked to massive environmental contamination caused by artisanal and small-scale gold mining activities, which have reportedly intensified in the Zamfara since November 2009.
